WHILE walking along a narrow stretch of pavement on Princess Street, I had to stop in my tracks while an SUV car swung its front corner over the pavement, while reversing into a space on the opposite side of the road.
A pedestrian coming towards me did not have my benefit of watching the action unfold.
Had I not pulled her towards me, away from danger, she would probably have been knocked down, as the car proceeded to mount the low kerb and continued to reverse along the pavement for about a metre, apparently unbeknown to the driver until I glared at them.
Drivers mounting pavements with impunity and parking dangerously on corners preventing visibility, are constant occurrences.
To my knowledge there were two people knocked over in car parks or ‘shared spaces’ and seriously injured last year in our town.
This is perhaps the moment to consider more pedestrianisation and removing parking along our narrow streets.
