I AGREE that drivers can have little concern for cyclists, which does lead to accidents taking place.
However, it is not all one sided.
Driving up King Street one day I had to be careful of two separate cyclists heading against the direction of traffic.
Mind you, the second was “not cycling” but scooting his bike down the road.
The police, I believe from an incident in my youth, would still treat that as cycling.
I am concerned that drivers joining from side roads and pedestrians crossing the road will not expect vehicles heading in the wrong direction.
However good a cyclist is, if someone steps out immediately in front of them an accident is likely to occur.
I noticed the same lack of awareness of the Highway Code during the CycleFest.
It is a small minority of cyclists who do this but the few who do result in drivers being less tolerant of all cyclists.
Oh, to balance this recently I have also seen a van belonging to a local business heading the wrong way up King Street from Minshull Street to Edgerton Square. I’m writing this as a driver, cyclist and pedestrian.
