I STARTED to read the letter in last week’s Knutsford Guardian from Timothy Wood on the EU referendum “a little more say on things” with interest, hoping that this would be the start of a balanced local debate.

I was quickly disappointed when I read his characterisation “the people who want to stay in the EU are all groups with vested interests”.

There are lots of factors to weigh when considering whether or not we stay in the EU, and whichever way people decide to vote we should respect their opinions even if that is not a position we agree with.

At a time when the national debate has been plagued by “Project Fear” promising Armageddon if we are to leave and “Project Hate” on the other side vilifying anybody who dares express a different view to theirs.

I think it is time for a balanced and informed local discussion on the matter.

And where do I stand? Well one thing I agree with Mr Wood on is that if we were to leave the EU the Booths carpark would still have its share of BMWs, but just not as many as might of been had we stayed in.
