AS BONFIRE Night approaches, please could I urge people not to build their bonfires until nearer the night, or if possible on the day the event is due to take place.

This is because many animals, for example hedgehogs and even pets such as tortoises can use them as places to sleep or make a home, so are in danger of being injured or killed when the bonfire is lit.

The materials for the bonfire could, if possible, be collected in another part of the field or garden, then put into place when needed.

This would minimise danger.

In fact, this could also apply to other times of the year when people accumulate garden rubbish and other items to be burnt at a later date.

Please try to keep bonfire night safe for both humans and animals, and enjoy yourselves.
