AS BOTH a motorist and a pedestrian, I am increasingly irked by the lack of signalling by fellow drivers.

I admit, to some extent, I am guilty of on occasions not using my vehicle signal, but in circumstances such as leaving a motorway or pulling out, this step is vital.

Even on motorways the practice, which used to be ‘mirror, signal, manoeuvre’, has been in some instances reduced to ‘signal and manoeuvre’ by motorists so keen to get to their destination that any risk is worth taking in saving a millisecond of time.

In some instances even ‘signal and manoeuvre’ has been taken down a notch to ‘manoeuvre’, which heightens the threat to road users.

As a pedestrian, the dangers are even worse, particularly given that anybody looking for a car signal could put themselves in conflict with one of these non-signalling loon.

I am thinking of the elderly and people with disabilities.

The police have clearly given on trying to improve poor driving, and it is rare that anybody appears in court for failing to signal.

So that leaves both motorists and pedestrians in mortal danger from uncaring people more concerned with texting their mates or sorting out their make-up than observing the Highway Code.

Let’s make careless motorists car-less motorists, and the sooner the better.
