I WOULD like to publicly declare my support for the amendment to the Serious Crime Bill tabled by Fiona Bruce, making it clear that conducting or procuring abortion on the grounds of gender is illegal.
Not only is the practice of sex-selective abortion wrong, it highlights the real issue of women who are unreasonably pressurised into abortions solely because of gender and I believe that the amendment sends out a clear message that this is not to be tolerated in the UK.
Despite the increasing public perception that politics is a somewhat squalid occupation and politicians engage in little more than one-upmanship and point scoring, there are many occasions that there is unity across the divide and I was pleased to see this amendment supported from all sides of the House.
