BEXTON Lane, Blackhill Lane and Bexton Road are a resource shared between those who have children at the local schools and many other residents.

Imposing a blanket 20mph zone is an unnecessary imposition.

If safety is an issue, then I have the following suggestions: Impose no parking during school hours for a half-a-mile radius around all the schools.

Prohibit small children from riding scooters or bikes on the pavement to and from school.

Introduce variable speed limits within half-a-mile of the schools, using electronic signage, but only during term time, and school start and finish times (this is done overseas – eg Australia).

Lastly, enforce existing parking regulations in the area.

SIDs on access roads will gather more support than speed cameras.

I have lived off Bexton Lane for more than 20 years (both my children went to the local schools), and as is well documented the roads around the schools are congested by drop off and pick-ups.

It is often impossible to get up to 30mph at this time, but the parked cars make visibility difficult, and children scooting off from their parents are hard to see.

It is these things that will lead to accidents, not speed alone.
