KNUTSFORD FC start their Cheshire Amateur Cup campaign away to Sandbach Reserves on Saturday on the back of a cracking league win.

Reds retained second place in Cheshire League One with a 3-1 home success against table toppers Upton JFC, who lost points for the first time in eight matches since the season’s start.

Chairman Jimmy Evans said: “It was a big win against a decent side who had some pace and tried to play football, but Knutsford were controlled and better, earned their win and could have scored a couple more in front of a large crowd.

“Before the game, we held a kids fun day with a bouncy castle and barbecue which went down well with the local kids who stayed on to support their team.”

Knutsford went ahead after a corner on the left was headed home by Cavanagh in the 15th minute.

A through ball in the 35th minute caught Knutsford out – it looked offside but the referee waved play on and Upton finished well from 15 yards for 1-1.

Reds got their noses in front again shortly before half time.

Brandon Blades made a powerful run down the left and crossed into the box for Woodward to finish off.

The killer third goal came in the 71st minute.

Cavanagh, enjoying a good game, spun and shot low with his trusty left foot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
