Abram 0 Egerton 6

EGERTON cruised to the next stage of the Northern Cup following a convincing win against opponents from the Wigan and District Amateur League’s fourth tier.

Yellows took the lead when Ashley Wells’ cross was deflected into his own goal by an Abram defender.

And the visitors doubled the lead when debutant Luke May headed in from a corner before half an hour had been played.

The Knutsford outfit settled the outcome shortly after the interval, when Tom Arnold raced clear before sending a smart finish past the home team’s custodian.

Three goals in quick succession added gloss.

The first arrived when Wells teed up Luke Morgan to convert from close range, then substitute Aaron Kelly got in on the act.

He slotted a well-directed shot into the corner from the edge of the penalty area to make it 5-0, then benefitted from a mistake when his next attempt slipped through the goalkeeper’s fingers late on.

Egerton can expect a tougher test when they visit in-form Middlewich in Cheshire League One this weekend, kick off 2pm.

“The boys did what we asked of them,” said Yellows’ management team.

“They turned up, did a professional job and went home. We also played some nice football and kept possession well.

“The pitch was decent, which allowed us to play the way we knew we needed against tough opponents.”
The second round is scheduled for the last weekend in November.
