Knutsford rally proves in vain as first-half mistakes prove costly in defeat to Capenhurst

KNUTSFORD returned to league duty following a five-week break on Saturday, but could not record a win against visiting Capenhurst.

Blues made a series of unforced errors in the first half, during which they conceded three unanswered tries, two converted, to trail 19-0 by the break.

The hosts made changes to their line-up during the interval, strengthening their pack, but after an initial improvement they conceded a further unconverted try – unconverted – to their opponents.

When a Capenhurst prop was sent by the referee to the sin bin as punishment for a stamp, Knutsford made the most of an opportunity.

Following a fine run from his own 22 by Alex Malcolm, the hosts recycled the ball well and were rewarded with a try from Howard Dunkerley.

Malcolm added the extras.

Blues began to dominate the set piece and, following another fine passage of play, Dave Gol touched down between the posts to leave Malcolm with a straightforward conversion.

The home side remained in control even after their guests were restored to a full complement, but they were unable to score again and close the gap further.

Coach Geoff Crawford and skipper Sam Bensky praised their players’ efforts, but admitted their side need to stop making avoidable errors.

Knutsford visit neighbours Congleton this Saturday.

They continue to train at Booth’s Hall every Thursday, from 7.30pm, when new players can attend.
