High Legh WI by Jenny Pearce

Members of High Legh WI’s were led on a light hearted journey through English history, following pub signs. They went from 1066 (and all that) to pub signs bearing the arms of powerful families such as the White Hart, Red Lion and High Legh’s Bear’s Paw. They were reminded of when ale was safer to drink than water, and the symbols of the medieval church featured on many inn signs such as the Angel, Cross Keys (St Peter) and the Eagle (lectern). Pub signs with examples of different trades and transport often reflected the landlord’s perception of his or her customers. Royalty, war heroes, and public figures from Marilyn Monroe to Shakespeare, all feature on English pub signs. The High Legh WI darts team and the walking group will have a chance to think about the hidden history of the pub sign when they next have a pub lunch.

Tea after the talk led to planning the celebration of 100 years of the WI, ‘High Tea at High Legh’. Many members volunteered to play their part in making this a truly memorable occasion, working together to create an enjoyable afternoon and celebrating the companionship of the WI.

High Legh’s next monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, September 8 at 7.30pm in High Legh Village hall, the subject will be the work of the Children’s Adventure Trust. Visitors are very welcome.
