Cranford Quilters by Diana Judd

Cranford Quilters continued making quilts for the Linus charity, an organisation which provides quilts and knitted blankets to give comfort to children who are seriously ill or who have been traumatised in some other way.

Usually distributed through hospitals, they are each given to an individual child and then belong to that child. They are continuing with the project throughout the summer.

“All in a Day’s Work”. What has that to do with patchwork? Some husbands may think too much of a day’s work is left undone because of it. This phrase, however, is the title of a collection of small quilts known as a “suitcase collection”, made by the Contemporary Quilters group of the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles and delivered to us in a suitcase.

It was very interesting to see how people had interpreted the title and what their inspiration was: a window cleaner on a skyscraper, a road mender, a housewife, a miner who made pit props, the maker’s own day looking after her mother and helping out with six grandchildren and so the list goes on. Some were very modern and difficult to understand without the explanatory notes; others were easy such as that showing all the tasks done by the maker referred to above who depicted Post-It Notes each with a different job to be done that day.

It was a very inspiring collection of small quilts, some of which were fun, some more serious, and they included a variety of techniques such as painting, printing, stitching, foiling and beading so left us with plenty to think about.

The next meeting is on July 27 and will be the summer social at St Vincent’s RC Church, Tatton Street, Knutsford at 7:30pm. Visitors are always welcome. Call Karen on 01625 532713 for information. There is no meeting in August.
