CHAIRMAN Chris Williams, welcomed members and visitors to Goostrey Village Hall on a sunny afternoon recently and reminded members of the Flower Festival in Byley in September and the summer lunch in a member’s garden in August.

JUDITH Adshead gave a report on Cheshire Show at the recent meeting of Lower Withington WI. Once again they did extremely well winning cups for Combined Class 1, Flowers Class 6 and the Middlewich Cup for the most points in staging and interpretation for Class 1 where they obtained 159 points out of 160; the first for any WI.

THE Friends of Tabley’s penultimate concert of the season was “An Evening with the Hallé Strings”. The duo comprised Sarah Ewins (co-principal violin) and Tim Pooley (viola), a real life duo as they are married.

KNUTSFORD Churches Together hosted a Pentecost Picnic on The Moor, joined by town mayor Councillor Neil Forbes and his wife mayoress Jacquelyn Forbes, with a large gathering of people enjoying food together on what was a glorious sunny afternoon.

PREPARATIONS for The Cheshire Show featured highly at the recent meeting of Over Peover WI. Happily, so did news of improvements to the village hall; mainly windows and the roof and plans were made for spring cleaning.

Dave Cooper led his A group NE out of Grasmere to Easdale Tarn and then westwards to Coldale Tarn. The climb continued past Sergeant Man and on to High Raise. The return path took them eastwards along the ridge from Greenup Edge eventually descending into Grasmere via Calf Crag and the iconic Lion and Lamb rocks at Helm Crag to complete a glorious walk of 10 miles and 3000ft of ascent.

THE Friends of Tabley were recently given a delightful concert of literary music by Rosie Lomas and her accompanist Jonathan Gait. Rosie, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and ENO, conjured up Tabley House’s glamorous, regency heyday with music inspired by Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell.

GOOSTREY WI members voted almost unanimously to support the Resolution at the National AGM which asked for help to raise the awareness of organ donation. Sue Leicester gave a presentation to help them to reach a decision.

OVER 30 members of High Legh WI attended the May meeting, welcomed by President Norma Wright. The flowers for the president’s table were donated by Jean Atkinson and were given to secretary, Pam Higham who drew the lucky ticket.

ALISON Davies was the speaker at the May meeting of Jodrell Side WI. She gave an entertaining snapshot of her life rearing beef cattle and how it had led to her becoming a minor TV celebrity with appearances on shows including GMTV, Come Dine With Me and Dragons Den.

MEMBERS of Cranford Quilters had a very enjoyable evening recently with three members of Chester P’s and Q’s. They talked informally about the quilts they had brought with them and Jackie, Catriona and Debbie showed the group’s Suitcase Collection which included a group of quilts based on an Alpine theme.

‘ALARMS and excursions of being a land girl’ by Heather Ghent – There can’t be many land girls left from the Second World War, but the speaker for the Knutsford Historical Society meeting, Heather Ghent, was very entertaining with slides and her repartee on life as a land girl.
