THE head nurse from Holly House Veterinary Surgery will visit a Greek island to tackle the problem of feral cats.

Zoe Tomkinson, 28, plans to spend two weeks with experts who catch and neuter strays on Paxos.

“It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said.

“It’s going to be nothing like what I’m used to.”

Zoe first heard about the trip when she read an advertisement from the Paxos Animal Welfare Society.

There have been attempts in recent years to control the cat problem on the island, but there are still hundreds of strays.

In two weeks experts have been known to neuter more than 140 cats, which included as many as 22 in one day.

“It’s getting better, but there’s still a massive amount of them,” said Zoe.

Paxos Animal Welfare Society was founded in May 2006 by two holidaymakers who had noticed the feral cat problem.

The animals are now caught, neutered and then their ears are also marked so they can be easily identified.

Zoe expects next month’s trip to be very different to her current job at Holly House in Mobberley Road, Knutsford.

She said the team would be working on a table outside, rather than in a sterilised operating theatre.

“You’ve just got a table under a little tree and it will all be done outside,” she said.

Holly House’s head nurse and her colleague Leyla Wilkinson, 27, will help raise funds for the work by completing an eight-mile sponsored dog walk on August 16.

The route near Crewe includes 50 stiles and the money will go towards the Paxos Animal Welfare Society’s activities.

To help visit the reception at Holly House Veterinary Surgery in Mobberley Road, Knutsford.

“We just want to raise as much as we can,” said Leyla.
