A SCULPTOR could create a new landmark in Knutsford town centre if enough people support it.

Tim Burgess, who recently carved King Canute out of a dying beech tree, said it would be possible to create a 10ft character from Mrs Gaskell’s novel Cranford for about £4,000.

“It would depend what it was, but a figure would not be too much of a problem,” he said.

His latest work of art - in Chelford Road - has been drawing admiring glances. Linda Coleman, of Mellor Crescent, said the 10ft carving of Canute - complete with crown and sword - was magnificent.

“I admit to doing a ‘double take’ when I first saw it,” she said.

On Thursday Mr Burgess, 52, said he often carved creations from dying tree trucks but he could also create a sculpture from wood supplied by Frankland Tree Services in Ashley - and then place it where it was wanted.

His previous sculptures have included an 8ft owl in Church Lane, Mobberley, and a sculpture of Hannah the bald eagle at the Gauntlet Birds of Prey Centre in Manchester Road.

He also worked on sculptures of birds in the arboretum at Jodrell Bank near Goostrey.

One of his most recent requests was for a model of a backbone for a chiropractor’s clinic in Sale.

Would Knutsford town centre benefit from the creation of a chainsaw sculpture?
