A UNIVERSITY student has clinched his gold Duke of Edinburgh award - five years after he started.

Marc Hughes, now 19, was presented with it at a St James’ Palace ceremony attended by Prince Philip His dad, George, of Tabley Road, Knutsford, said it was the culimation of five years of hard work.

Marc was a pupil at The Grange School in Hartford when he earned his bronze and silver awards.

To gain gold he spent a month helping to repair and repaint a changing room at a school in Ecuador, followed by a trek to the summit of Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes.
