CAPTAIN Jon Beesley led Cheshire to a convincing victory over Cumbria in a Northern Counties League fixture at Wilmslow Golf Club.

Warrington-based Beesley, who is attached to The Mere Golf Resort and Spa in Knutsford, had experienced hands like High Legh Park's Chris Chilton alongside him in the 13-5 win.

But it was an event in which Cheshire showed their depth in talent at this level, with several players making their county match debuts.

The morning foursomes featured some close matches before victories for Josh Sims and Jack Nicholson (Vicars Cross) two-up, Kris Towers (Crewe) and Luke Yardley (Stockport) one-up, Ollie Claireaux (Delamere Forest) and Paul McFerran (Warrington) 4/2, Tom Duncalf (Sandiway) and Dominic O’Brien (Warrington) 3/1.

Halves by Beesley and Chilton and Haminder Matharu and Matt Birch (Wilmslow) gave Cheshire a commanding 5-1 lead going into the afternoon singles.

It was evens stevens in the first four matches with wins for Nicholson 3/2 and Sims 6/5 being cancelled by defeats for Yardley one down and Beesley 3/2.

Then the Cheshire middle order took total control with wins by Chilton one-up, Towers 3/2, Claireaux 4/3, McFerran 4/2, Duncalf 2/1 and Birch 2/1.

Skipper Beesley was glad to have Cheshire boys' captain Ben Currie (Wilmslow) on his bag during one of the hottest days for golf in 2022.
