COMPANY boss Vincent Green is calling for the road leading to an industrial estate to be widened to address ‘a dangerous bottleneck’.

Mr Green is the chairman of stamp auctions firm Sandafayre, which is situated on the Parkgate Industrial Estate at Knutsford.

Traffic enters and leaves the estate along Parkgate Lane from its junction with the B5085 Mobberley Road.

Mr Green said the line of traffic trying to leave the estate often stretched to at least 600 metres, and he is calling for Parkgate Lane to be widened near its junction with Mobberley Road.

Tatton Estate has earmarked land north of Parkgate Industrial Estate for 235 houses and apartments.

The scheme won outline approval in 2015, and approval is now being sought from Cheshire East Council for matters including appearance, landscaping, layout and scale.

Mr Green said: “As an owner of one of the businesses on the estate I have become increasingly alarmed by traffic problems faced by those using the estate, and some time ago advised my staff they should avoid cycling to work as it is too dangerous.”

Mr Green contacted the Guardian to voice his concerns following a collision near the shops in Parkgate Lane on Tuesday, June 26.

Police said just before 9am officers were called to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian, a 57-year-old man, who was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Mr Green added: “I have been left stunned at the news that a housing development may soon be built, and the access would be along the same Parkgate Lane.

“These new homeowners are to join the rest of us chancing the dangerous bottleneck opposite the shops, where pedestrians, cars and wagon drivers intermingle in an effectively single lane environment.

“Over the years I have witnessed some terrifying near misses and altercations around the shops - there are also a lot of older drivers filtering in alongside the Co-op store.

“This could so easily be avoided if a small piece of land was given over to widening the road to allow parking and passing - it’s almost wide enough now, but not quite.

“This estate is a big source of employment, and the people who live and work around here are being put in danger for the want of a bit of road widening.”

Mr Green allows his staff to leave early because of the traffic queues.
