CHILDREN will be in the running for trophies at this year’s Canute Kids Duathlon.

Entries are still open for the Smart Financial event at Egerton Youth Club (Knutsford) on Sunday, July 8.

The duathlon made a successful debut last July, when more than 120 primary school aged children from Knutsford and the surrounding area took part.

The event caters for children aged from four to 12 years, with three run-bike-run events and a Fun Run.

“It’s a really inspiring day, because the focus is all about taking part and having fun in a safe environment,” organiser Vicky McKinnon said.

“We have made a few tweaks for this year by opening entries up to year 7 pupils, and there will also be trophies up for grabs.”

Distances vary depending on age, but all the races are held in the grounds of Egerton Youth Club on Mereheath Lane in Knutsford.

“It doesn’t matter how fast or slow the kids are, there is so much support from parents and volunteers,” said fellow organiser Helen Murray from Chelford.

“Each participant is encouraged around the course and rewarded for their hard work with a medal and a goodie bag.”

Altrincham-based financial planning business Smart Financial has continued to back the event.

“It’s a fantastic initiative to help promote an active lifestyle and we are delighted to support it again this year,” chief executive Steve Martin said.

Each participant will also receive healthy treats from Bear Nibbles at the finish line and a discount on clothing from EverActiv sportswear.

Paul Rance, manager of CFC Charity Bike Shop in Prestbury, will also be on hand for any last-minute bike mechanical issues.

Children will need their own bike and helmet to take part in the event, which costs £10 for the duathlon and £5 for the Fun Run.
