MARATHON man Chris Green has been bitten by the 26-miler bug after surviving the hottest London Marathon on record.

Chris, 49, from Holmes Chapel, took on one of the world’s most famous marathons in memory of a former member of Holmes Chapel Hurricanes FC.

His inspiration for taking part was Scott Penlington, from Holmes Chapel, who died at the age of 25 in a light aircraft crash in 2016.

Scott was a former member of Holmes Chapel Hurricanes FC, and the foundation formed in his memory by the club aims to promote the development of footballing opportunities for more children, as Scott’s legacy.

Scott represented the Hurricanes at all junior age groups and progressed to the open age team.

The foundation has raised £15,000 to equip all 21 teams with a defibrillator, and has its sights set in the longer-term on having its own Hurricanes home ground in Holmes Chapel.

Chris and Scott’s dad Graham are good friends, having met through the Hurricanes.

Chris secured a place at the London Marathon, not needing to raise money for any charity, so decided to run for the Scott Penlington Foundation, raising £500 in the process.

Chris’ wife Lizzie said: “It was the hottest London Marathon on record, which slowed everyone down.

“Chris finished in five hours 10 minutes, a good hour longer than he hoped, but he got cramp around 17 miles and had to walk for a while.

“It was a fantastic day in London. The atmosphere was amazing, and it was a brilliantly-organised event.

“Chris had his family supporting him, and over the day between them all they got to see him at six miles, 17, 20 and 23 and at the end.

“We were all incredibly proud of him as he was amazing, and Chris wants to thank everyone who supported him and helped him to raise money for the fund.

“He has the marathon bug now, and has signed up again for the London Marathon next year.

“He has also put his name down for the Amsterdam Marathon in October and the Hamburg Marathon next May.”
