WORK has begun on improving accessibility and ensuring the long-term future of a home for the elderly.

A platform lift is being installed at Abbeyfield Knutsford, an independent home for 11 elderly residents off Bexton Road.

Work has started on extending the property to provide a platform lift and enlarged office, work should is due to be completed by the beginning of July.

The lift will be large enough to accommodate a wheelchair, making the whole building fully accessible for everyone and particularly those with mobility difficulties.

The extension is being funded by contributions from Abbeyfield Knutsford’s own resources, and grants obtained from Knutsford Town Council, Cheshire Community Foundation, the Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust and from a legacy left by a former resident.

Funding is also being provided by the Co-op, as Abbeyfield Knutsford is one of its chosen local charities and customers of the Co-op can elect for contributions from their purchases to go toward Abbeyfield Knutsford.

Abbeyfield Knutsford chairman Robert Newton said: “We are very excited about the new lift extension, which will help residents, improve accessibility and ensure the long-term future of the house.

“We currently have two vacancies, and anyone who is interested in visiting or looking to take up residence should contact our secretary on 01565 632719 or e mail info@abbeyfieldknutsford.org.”

A resident housekeeper provides two meals a day and keeps a friendly eye on the residents, who each have their own flatlets and use of a communal dining room and conservatory, together with private gardens.
