A NEW group at St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School has made a huge donation to a foodbank following a December initiative.

The recently-formed Mini Vinnie group at the Manor Park South school organised and executed a ‘reverse advent calendar’, involving the whole school through the entirety of last month.

Instead of opening an advent calendar, each day students would donate items of food for Mid-Cheshire Foodbank, with a focus on giving during the festive season.

Lisa Holland, deputy head at St Vincent’s, said: “Our focus was on giving rather than receiving.

“The response from the children was overwhelming and a volunteer from Mid-Cheshire Foodbank arrived at school to collect the donations.

“Her car was full to the brim.”

The Mini Vinnies group was formed in late November, with the reverse advent calendar its first idea.

Members – pupils from across the age groups – are dedicating time to help others and organising events for the whole school to do the same.

The foodbank, seeded by the Trussell Trust, opened in 2012 and last year provided three-day emergency food supplies to 3,089 people in crisis.

Its warehouse is located in Winsford. midcheshire.foodbank.org.uk
