FAMILY and friends raised a toast to Ethel Chidley to join in the celebrations for her 100th birthday.

Ethel is a resident at residential care home Sunrise of Mobberley, and spent her milestone birthday with her friends and family, including her son Chris and his wife Elaine, as well as members of the Sunrise team and fellow residents.

Making the day even more special, the room was adorned with birthday decorations and ‘100’ balloons.

Ethel was delighted to open her card from The Queen, as well as blowing out her 100 candles.

Ethel moved into Sunrise 18 months ago, and was also joined by chief executive officer of Sunrise Senior Living UK, Dr Natalie-Jane MacDonald, who came to wish her a happy 100th birthday.

Manchester born and bred, Ethel was born on November 21, 1917 and lived in Withington as a child, before moving to Moss Side when she married and later to Timperley.

Ethel was a seamstress in Manchester, and was married to her husband, Harold, for 66 years until his death in 2006.

Ethel has two children, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Dawn Williams, director of community relations at Sunrise of Mobberley said: “Family has always been a big part of Ethel’s life, being one of six siblings, and she still enjoys social gatherings, where everyone can come together and celebrate.

“Among her many hobbies Ethel loved going on cruise ship holidays, including sailing on the Diana World Cruise in 1996.

“She is also a keen cook, and her favourite staple dish is her homemade rice pudding.

“Ethel enjoyed bowling and whist, and loves to play cards with her fellow residents – she is known as their Queen of Hearts.

“It was an honour to celebrate Ethel’s very special 100th birthday with her friends and family surrounding her.

“The day was one to remember for all of us, and we are delighted that Ethel enjoyed the celebrations so much.

“She is such an integral part of Sunrise of Mobberley, and all the residents and the team wish her many happy returns on such an impressive milestone day.”
