KNUTSFORD'S former world Scrabble champion is hoping that a trip to Kenya will spell success.

Mark Nyman travels to Nairobi this week to battle it out in the WESPAC tournament – the players’ association championship and the first to be held in Africa.

After a strong showing at the world championships in Nottingham earlier this year, Mark is aiming higher still with thousands of dollars of prize money on offer including $20,000 for the winner.

“I am aiming for a top 10 finish,” he said, ahead of the World English-language Scrabble Players’ Association competition starting on November 8.

“The world championship is by name the biggest tournament, but this is better – it’s run by the players and is more prestigious. It’s the one I have been focusing on and I’m feeling good.”

Despite recent unrest in Kenya, the event is scheduled to go ahead at one of the capital's largest conference centres.
