A KNUTSFORD resident is calling for action at the town’s bus station, which he says has been vandalised for years with no sign of repair.

The bus station, outside Booths in Bexton Road, is the subject of an ownership dispute, with the supermarket claiming that Cheshire East Council - which is currently investigating the matter - is responsible for its upkeep.

But regular bus user Peter Russell, 53, says the council should bite the bullet and give the shelter a fresh look.

“It’s an absolute disgrace,” said Peter, who claims he first contacted the council over the issue around five years ago.

“Graffiti has been scratched into the paintwork and three panes of glass have been smashed for years.

“CEC are saying it’s not their job to repair it, and it keeps going back between them and the supermarket.

“They said that Booths are responsible for their buildings inside and out.

“We are being given the run-around. It’s an absolute disgrace, especially for people coming in to Knutsford.”

While CEC is currently investigating who is responsible for maintenance work, Booths' estates team have confirmed to the Guardian that it is not them.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: "Booths has looked into the matter and the bus stop does not belong to Booths, it is under the jurisdiction of the local council.

"We would advise the resident to refer back to CEC."

A council spokesman said: “We are disappointed to see this bus terminus vandalised in this way as we wish to see more of our residents using our bus services and to have a pleasant experience.

“The council will investigate where responsibility for repairs and maintenance of this particular building currently lies and will take any necessary action to see that the bus shelter is fully repaired.”
