KNUTSFORD residents are being invited to learn about the early signs and treatment of skin cancer at a free public lecture on December 6.

The talk, entitled ‘Skin Cancer - Awareness and Treatment’ – will be delivered by Dr Wayne Maxwell, a speciality doctor in dermatology who works from several clinics in Macclesfield.

The session will discuss the causes of skin cancer and aim to raise awareness of the early signs and what to look out for in skin lesions that could be of concern as well as an overview of the incidence, causes, types and treatment of skin cancer.

The incidence of melanoma (the most dangerous type of skin cancer) is expected to increase by 50 per cent in the next 15 years and a third of these cases are under 55 years of age.

There are about 2,700 deaths per year from skin cancer and incidence has tripled in past 20 years in UK and Western Europe.

Dr Maxwell said: “All types of skin cancer are increasing. At the talk I will aim to address common questions such as - when should you be worried about a skin lesion? And how can you protect yourself and lower your risk?”

The ‘Health Matters’ talk takes place at 7pm in Macclesfield Hospital’s Lecture Theatre.
