BEXTON Primary School has welcomed its new head teacher following the resignation of former leader Paul Dolan.

Emily Armstrong, 37, who has been acting head from January has spoken with the Guardian about the hopes and aspirations she has for the school in her new role.

She has worked in the school for seven years, starting out as assistant head and was made head teacher before the May half term.

“I am loving the job,” said Ms Armstrong. “I am thoroughly enjoying the role; what’s really nice about it is the staff are one incredible team.

“We are taking it from a good school to great. It’s really going places and moving forward. We want to make it the best it possibly can be and create stronger links within the community.

“My main priority is to ensure that every child enjoys their learning by providing amazing experiences.”

The school received its last OFSTED inspection in May 2013, where it received a ‘good’ rating. Ms Armstrong said she is hoping to build on the foundations already in place.

“There’s a significant amount of pressure on the school to increase its attainment in line with the new curriculum but we as a school strongly believe that unless you enjoy that learning you won’t be able to make that progress.

“If we can get all that together that’s a winning formula.

“We are a family it is one big team here with the kids, the parents, staff and governors. We have had the most unbelievable amount of support. It’s really helped that we have been able to hit the ground running. I have been very strongly supported by deputy head Jill Sach.

“We are looking to make our own impact on the curriculum for the year making our own decisions and working with the team in order to make a real difference.”

Ms Armstrong began her teaching career in Trafford, before going to live in Bahrain in the Middle East where she taught as head of infants in a primary school.

She returned to Trafford where she continued as head of infants before moving to Knutsford in 2009.

“Bahrain was a great experience and gave me the opportunity to see other elements of learning. It helped me along the path toward head teacher.”
