KNUTSFORD Lions are hoping to be swept away by a tide of revellers at their annual fair on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30.

This year the King Canute Fair will support the town's celebration of the 1,000 years since Canute the Great became King of all England.

There will be balloon modelling and magic provided by Alan Russell 'Snaggers', Street Music provided by 'Redwing' and Patrick Cooke will be playing music on his street organ.

Egerton Pre -School parents and volunteers will be face painting, the Scouts will supply barbecue food, and charity and trade stalls will line King Street.

"As the town's name of 'Canute's Ford' in the Domesday Book is reputed to have come as a result of his crossing of Knutsford's River Lily we are delighted to be taking on a Canute theme," said club president Pat Heath.

"There will be wide range of trade and charity market stalls, ice cream, barbecue and food stalls, face painting and street entertainment to amuse and entertain all the family."

The Knutsford and District Lions Club has been running the fair on King Street since 1990.

As usual the road will be closed between Church Hill and Minshull Street and the fair is open to the public from 11am to 4pm.

Knutsford Hosts will be supporting the Lions on their stall, and artist Russell Kirk will be running a community workshop from noon as part of the Knutsford Promenades Community Association's Canute's Crossing event taking place on Saturday, September 10.
