A LIFELONG Knutsfordian has celebrated her 100th birthday with two parties thrown in her honour.

Ada McNamara, who has lived in the town since she was three months old, was treated to two get-togethers to celebrate her special day.

But Ada’s story has a twist, as she was born on April 2, 1916, yet when her father registered her birth there were administrative difficulties and her official birthday was registered as May 2, 1916.

Her niece, Ann Finn, told the Guardian that although her official documents show that she will not be 100 years old until next month, the family has always celebrated the occasion on her ‘real birthday’.

“She very much enjoys the company of her nieces, great-nieces, and great-great nieces and nephews,” said Anne.

“The party was lovely. About 60 people turned up. The district nurses came, the lunch club and people from the church including Father John Joyce from St Vincent’s who came along and gave a lovely speech. She really loved the party.”

Ada was born in Manchester before moving to Knutsford. She married her husband Horace, who died around 15 years ago.

Ada used to work in Knutsford’s laundrette, before becoming a domestic worker in people’s homes.

She still has an active social life. Ann said: “She is very sprightly. She has a budgie who she absolutely adores. She goes to St John’s Lunch Club and she goes out regularly on a Thursday for lunch with one of her friends.”

St John’s Lunch Club threw an additional party for her on Tuesday, April 5.

“This was an extra celebration for Ada, who had already celebrated with family and friends on her birthday, Saturday 2nd April,” said Yvonne Baker, treasurer of the lunch club. “Ada was wished health and happiness by all present, which included the grandchildren of one of the helpers.

“The children had made birthday cards for the occasion and presented these to Ada, along with posies of flowers.

“Ada has been a regular attender at St Johns’ Wood Lunch Club for a number of years and is currently the oldest member. Not only does she enjoy the meals, but she always stays on for a game of cards afterwards.”
