SIX members of the Royal British Legion have finally fulfilled a longstanding wish to lay wreaths at Menin Gate in Ypres.

The group from Knutsford and District Branch RBL travelled to the iconic war memorial in Belgium, as well as other WW1 sites across the country and in France.

The ceremony was opened by the Royal British Legion Standard Bearer, Malcolm Thomas, who marched to his place under the Menin Gate.

After the last post sounded at the bridge, the standard was dipped and fellow member, Tony Want stood forward to give the exhortation.

Mr Want said: “This was particularly poignant for me as the name of a relative, Ernest Want, aged 20, of the Cheshire Regiment, is inscribed on the Menin Gate.”

Wreaths were then laid on behalf Knutsford & District Branch, the Lymm & District Branch, and 2056 Squadron Air Training Corps based in Knutsford.

The group also had the opportunity to visit Talbot House in Poperinge, West Flanders, which has connections with Knutsford.

Mr Want said: “A number of visitors, British and non-British, said that the presence of the standard at the parade had made a memorable event even more special for them.”
