GEORGE Osborne has some exciting ideas for Tatton, he told the Knutsford Guardian following his overwhelming victory in yesterday’s General Election.

Mr Osborne was more than 18,000 votes clear of his nearest challenger as he triumphed in the Tatton constituency for the Conservatives by taking more than 58 per cent of the vote.

He increased his 2010 majority by 3,754 votes, and saw his percentage of the vote rise by four per cent.

The Labour, UK Independence Party and Green Party candidates also saw their percentage of the vote increase on the night, in the case of UKIP by almost 11 per cent.

The major loser at the election was the Liberal Democrat candidate, with the party’s vote collapsing, dropping by 14 per cent compared with 2010.

Following his election victory Mr Osborne told the Guardian: “I am honoured to have been asked to carry on as the MP [for Tatton], and thank everyone who voted for me.

“I also make this commitment, that whether you voted for me or not I will represent the entire constituency and everyone who lives here.

“I have demonstrated that as well as my national responsibilities I take my local responsibilities incredibly seriously, and I am first and foremost the Member of Parliament for Tatton.

“I have some exciting ideas about what we can do here to make life better for people, so that is what I am going to get on and deliver.”

In his acceptance speech at Macclesfield Leisure Centre, where the count took place, he said: “I remember standing on this stage five years ago, and I made a commitment to work with the British people to try and turn Britain around. We’ve made great progress.

“Tonight the British people have asked us to finish the job, and that is what we will now set about doing to make sure we have a country which lives within her means, to make sure we have an economy which works for everyone in our United Kingdom, to bring that United Kingdom together, to make sure we have the right relationship with Europe and to build a northern powerhouse here in the north of England.

“We’ve had a historic result tonight, we’ve got historic challenges ahead of us, so now we’ll get back to work and make sure we complete the task.”

He thanked his fellow candidates for a “really well-fought contest conducted in a really great democratic spirit,” and thanked his agent and “the brilliant team from the Tatton Conservatives, the best team anyone could wish for.”

Mr Osborne won the Tatton seat with 26,552 votes, a majority of 18,241 over Labour Party candidate David Pinto-Duschinsky on 8,311 votes.

UK Independence Party candidate Stuart Hutton was third with 4,871 votes, with Liberal Democrat Gareth Wilson in fourth on 3,850 and Green Party candidate Tina Rothery gained 1,714 votes.

The turnout was 69.97 per cent.
