FATHERS, sons and brothers are being invited to avail of life-saving tests at Knutsford Golf Club next week.

PSA blood testing for early detection of prostrate cancer will take place at the Mereheath Lane club on Saturday February 7, from 10am-2pm.

The session, which is run by Leighton Hospital Prostrate Cancer Support Group and Awareness Campaign, is particularly aimed at men aged 40 and over.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with over 40,000 diagnosed and some 12,000 dying from it every year in the UK.

Only eight per cent of eligible men in the UK are tested compared to 60 to 70 per cent of eligible men across Europe and the US.

Gary Steele MBE, chairman of Leighton Hospital Prostrate Cancer Support Group, said: “We lag behind Europe and the USA in testing men for early detection prostate cancer. There are no early symptoms with this type of cancer, as some 80 per cent of men diagnosed do not have symptoms.

“The need to be tested is quite simply to ensure the cancer, if present, is in the early stage and can be successfully treated. What we do is provide the opportunity to test men in their own environment to which there is no need for an appointment.”

The test only takes a few minutes and costs £10. Pop along on the day, there is no need to book.
