FIRE cadets from Holmes Chapel and Knutsford are planning a trip of a lifetime to help build a much needed, safe school for children in Nepal.

Working with the charity Classrooms in the Clouds (CitC), a team of 20 young people and 10 team leaders from Cheshire will set out on a journey to the Himalayas, to get to the village of Thulodhunga in Nepal to help with the school project.

A plot of land above the village has been secured and villagers have started building the school ready for the arrival of the Cheshire group – which includes seven cadets and four leaders from Holmes Chapel and Knutsford – in November 2015.

Jessica Leighton, 15, from Holmes Chapel, is one of the fire cadets who will be making the trip next year.

“I am looking forward to so much about the trip; the challenge I have set myself and how that is going to make a difference to some other people’s lives,” said the Holmes Chapel Comprehensive student.

“I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to wonderful schooling and I want to help others to have the same.”

The group will trek for a day and a half in order to get to the village, which is in sight of Everest, carrying all the equipment needed for the project.

Youth Engagement Manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Nick Evans said: “The aim of the trip, apart from building a school for the village, is to give each cadet a challenge as part of their personal development.

“The trip will raise awareness of cultural diversity and enhance their knowledge about Third World Poverty.”

The cadets and leaders must raise £3,250 each for the trip. You can make a donation to the cadets going to Nepal by visiting the Youth Engagement pages on the website cheshirefire.gov.uk.
