GOOSTREY’S 2014 Rose Queen said she was ‘excited and nervous’ in equal measure about taking centre-stage at the upcoming 109th Rose Festival.

Five girls were the running for this year’s crown but Catherine Flanders, of Station Road, emerged victorious at the selection interviews on March 1.

The multi-talented 13-year-old is now preparing take over the reign from 2013’s Rose Queen Anna de Souza at the highly-anticipated annual event on Saturday June 28.

The Holmes Chapel Comprehensive student said: “I’m feeling both excited and nervous. I’ve seen it every year so it makes it quite special to be chosen.

“I’m used to getting up on stage to perform but this will be a bit different. I’m really looking forward to the crowning ceremony though and it will be great fun to have my friends with me.”

Catherine, who plays the trumpet and piano, will be joined by her attendants Rebbecca Goodwin, Ellen Memmott, Jemima Laniado, Amy Keeling and Lizzie Tichener on the day.

It will be a busy year ahead for Catherine as she will represent Goostrey at other events in the area.

Additional to this, Catherine has been recently selected for The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and will be performing at shows across the country throughout the year.

Mum Jackie said: “Catherine has been in the festival since she was three, for as long as she can remember. I’m really proud and really pleased for her. She always really enjoys it and it’s great she can be involved this year.”
