MOTORISTS have reacted in disbelief after being told that one of the major routes through Knutsford will be shut during evening rush hour next week.

German supermarket giant Aldi, which is currently building a new store on Brook Street, confirmed to the Guardian this week that roadworks outside the site will mean the road will have to be shut between 6pm and 6am.

Brook Street will close on Thursday, April at 6pm and the night time closures will continue until Sunday, April 21 – opening in time for Monday morning rush hour.

Roadworks on Hollow Lane and Brook Street have crippled the town in recent weeks – and were made even worse when more works took place on Toft Road in March.

Rush hour in Knutsford is normally between 4pm and 6.30pm and after hearing the news, commuters and residents called the decision a ‘joke’ to close the road at 6pm.

Comments were posted on the Guardian’s website and Facebook page.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Due to necessary works at our site in Brook Street, Knutsford, we must enforce a temporary road closure between Thursday, April 18 and Sunday, April 21.

“The temporary road closure, which has been approved by Cheshire East Council, will take place between 6pm and 6am each day.

“We will establish a road diversion to help motorists bypass the area.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and further details will be posted to local residents in due course.”

It is not yet been confirmed where the diversion will take motorists but the Guardian has been told it will involve Goughs Lane, with Macclesfield-bound traffic joining up to Chelford Road at the Booths Hall roundabout.
