AN election could be held in Knutsford next month after a town councillor decided to resign from her position.
Bernadette Emmett announced this week that she had resigned from Knutsford Town Council due to her work commitments.
She was elected in 2011, with the highest vote of the Over Ward councillors, and served on the finance, environment and operations committees. It was the first time she had stood as a councillor in the town.
In her pre-election comment to the Guardian she said that “it’s important that everyone in Knutsford feels part of how the town develops and functions as a community.”
Steve McQuade, town clerk, said: “The town council would like to thank Bernadette for the work she has put in for the good of the community since she was elected.
“Her resignation leaves a vacancy for Over Ward, and the notice of vacancy was posted today (Monday), and electors have 14 working days to call an election.
“Should an election not be called, the council will have the opportunity to co-opt a new councillor.”
If you would like an election to be called, you need to write to the returning officer at Cheshire East, Westfields, Middlewich Road, Sandbach, requesting an election.
Should 10 electors of the town request an election one will be called. The deadline for this is December 14.
