AH, The Human League – the soundtrack to my youth.

Creators of classic hits like Open Your Heart and Sound of The Crowd, pieces of electro pop brilliance that have, like all good music, really stood the test of time.

Susan Ann Sulley, one of the three surviving original members, said children as young as 12 are coming to their gigs these days.

She will be joining singer-songwriter Phil Oakey and fellow singer Joanne Catterall when they perform at the Tatton Park Picnic Concerts on Saturday, July 20.

Phil, Susan and Joanne have worked together for more than 30 years.

Susan said: “We’re more like family now and we’ve got used to each other.”

She thinks the fact the group stayed loyal to their Yorkshire roots may have kept their feet on the ground.

Susan added: “None of us wanted to live in London — we’d all like to have lived abroad but we couldn’t afford it.

“When we did really well in the early 80s there wasn’t a celebrity culture, we weren’t worried about falling out of a nightclub and someone taking photos of us.

“We’re all quite private so it’s nice being in Sheffield because people know who we are and they don’t take any notice of us.”

The group’s last album, Credo, was their first release in more than 15 years, but there is no sign of a return to the studio.
