RESPONSE to Abi Jones letter – ‘Boris is right, we will thrive’ (Guardian, October 3).

We are all fed up with duplicitous politicians in Westminster. Leaders past their prime obviously get forgetful in their old age. John Major said before the 2016 referendum: “There will not be another referendum on Europe.

This is it.”

Of course this was before Remain lost. And the late lamented Paddy Ashdown said: “I will forgive no one who does not respect the sovereign voice of the British people once it has spoken. Whether it is a majority of one per cent or 20 per cent, when the British people have spoken, you do what they command. Either you believe in democracy, or you don’t.” So that will include the current leader of your old party, Paddy, who wants to cancel Brexit altogether?

And of course, Anna Soubry, leader of the non existent, and wrongly named, Change UK party, who said before the referendum: “We are trusting the British people.

We will go to the people, and let the people decide whether or not to stay within the EU.” Three days after the referendum, she changed her mind – maybe her party is named after her inconsistency – when she said she had only made that speech because she expected Remain to win. She said: “ If I’d thought we’d lose, I wouldn’t have said it, obviously.”

All this exposes the hypocrisy of those who continue to block the democratic will of the British people, and furthermore, undermine our faith in our institutions and those who have office within them.

The Labour party, too, is riven in two by this issue, with recent polling showing they stand to lose 100 seats in a general election because of their duplicity on Brexit and their anti-Semitism. No wonder politicians are afraid of going back to the people for another election to clear this shower out.
