WE may think that we live in a democracy, ie rule according to the will of the people, but it seems we are all deluded.
For while virtually no one among the local electorate is in favour of demolishing the much loved War Memorial, our elected representatives expressed the opposite view, at the recent Northern Planning Committee meeting, indeed even going against the conservation officer’s view that the building be preserved.
However, this came as no surprise to me. Some years ago one of our local councillors told me that while he might listen to the views of his constituents, in the final analysis he would ignore their views in favour of his own.
Obviously the current system goes a long to explain why so few people bother to vote.
Maybe it is time for the rest of us to seriously question why we continue to take part in such undemocratic processes.
