THE Fly in the Ointment asked about Bally Ann day. I hadn’t heard of it, but we just starved when we were young!
I did a quick Google and there were some interesting comments.
One theory is that ‘Bally Ann’ is a corruption of Banyan Days.
Banyans were vegetarian Hindus and banyan day was slang for no meat day.
It is also suggested that Bally Ann is Australian slang for a frugal meal of mashed potatoes etc.
Another theory was that your belly was ‘anged’. All agreed that it was served on the day before pay day.
I saw one reference where Banyan was served three days in the workhouse with Scouse on three days and boiled beef on Sunday.
