WITH a cup final victory in the bag, can Egerton FC go on to secure the league title?

The Yellows will be hoping lifting the Manchester FA Saturday Challenge Trophy will give them the momentum to do just that, with the Cheshire Football League season coming to the crunch.

A 2-0 victory over Abacus Media of the Lancashire & Cheshire Amateur Football League on Friday night allowed Egerton to lift the trophy, with Milan Thompson and Remmi Williams on target.

CFL Premier Division leaders FC St Helens took advantage of Lee Williams’ side being otherwise engaged to stretch their lead at the top to eight points by beating Greenalls PSO 3-0 on Saturday.

However, Egerton do have a game in hand and return to league action on Saturday when they welcome AFC Knowsley to Mereheath Lane – their final home game before six consecutive matches on the road.

During Friday’s cup final at Hyde United FC’s Ewen Fields home ground, Egerton made the ideal start when Thompson slid the ball beyond the Abacus keeper to give his side an early lead.

Despite both sides having chances to score following the opener, the Yellows remained a goal to the good at half time.

In the second half, however, the decisive second goal came when Williams’ free kick ended up in the net after a goalkeeping error and Egerton saw out the rest of the game to lift the trophy.
