THE WITTON COLUMN - By Paul Harper

AFTER going a couple of weeks without a game, what a fantastic way to get back to action last Saturday! Witton produced a brilliant performance away from home at Mickleover Sports to give us a 4-1 victory.

Before the enforced break, Albion had gone through a couple of disappointing results and been knocked out of a couple of cup competitions.

Last Saturday was the perfect response, putting ourselves in a really good position in the league.

I can’t talk about Saturday’s match without mentioning Will Jones’ goal.

It’s not often that a player scores from the halfway line but Will did and in great style at Mickleover. He spotted the goalkeeper off his line and sent a sublime lob over his head for a fantastic goal! Well done, Will!

It marked a brilliant performance from all the lads who deserve a lot of credit for responding to the recent cup defeats in the manner in which they did.

As I mentioned, the result puts us in a really good position in the BetVictor Northern Premier League standings; within striking distance of the play-off zone, just one point behind fifth placed FC United of Manchester who sit in the final play-off position.

The scene couldn’t be set much better for our next league fixture, then, as FC visit Wincham Park on Saturday afternoon.

Victory over the Reds this weekend will see us leapfrog them and into the top five, so that is the added incentive for manager Carl Macauley and the players.

The league is really tight so far this season, with a number of teams bunched up together. Indeed, there are only two points separating FC United and Nantwich Town who lie in 13th.

And with a number of cup competitions taking place at this time, a number of clubs are playing catch up and have games in hand, so it’s difficult to gain a true reflection on the positioning of all clubs.

However, to be so close to the top of the table at this point in time is a huge credit to the management team of Carl Macauley and Gary Martindale, the backroom staff and, of course, the players.

It’s a big week ahead with that big game against FC United at Wincham Park.

The support the team has received, particularly at home, has been fantastic and I’m sure it will be once more on Saturday.

Be loud, be proud, be Wittoners and get right behind the team as I know you will.

It’s an occasion we’re really looking forward to, so I hope you can come down and enjoy it with us.
