LOPSIDED scorelines were a dominant feature on the opening day of the new rugby union season in leagues featuring Knutsford and Holmes Chapel.

The latter were toppled 51-28 away to Moore in Halbro North West League Division Two South.

That wasn't the highest tally accrued in that division though, with Didsbury Toc H seconds coming out on top 64-19 at Lymm thirds.

And Widnes seconds were 58-5 victors at Northwich seconds.

The margins of victory were even wider in three of the games a division below, with Knutsford suffering the most.

They were hammered 101-14 in Staffordshire against newcomers Newcastle seconds in Sale Sharks Division Three South.

All at Knutsford will be disappointed, especially after the previous week the team had progressed to the semi-finals of the Cheshire Plate with a 29-16 home success against Prenton.

Birkenhead Park thirds also rattled up a huge number of points, overhauling Carrington 77-21 away from home.

And also in the same division St Edwards Old Boys savaged Village Spartans 55-0.

The league programme continues this weekend.

Holmes Chapel will seek to turn the tide on Saturday at Helsby seconds, who cancelled last weekend's visit to Liverpool St Helens.

Knutsford will hit the road again, this time providing opposition to a Sefton seconds side that was defeated 45-17 at New Brighton seconds on opening day.

Knutsford's first home game of the season will be against Birkenhead Park on September 21.
