AT the Winter Flyers on Sunday in Birkenhead Park Manor Road's Joe Edwards took his second win of this series of the tournaments and further extended his lead at the top of the points table.

In the final, he beat Tixall's Nigel Hughes who played very well in his first visit to the Park in some time.

In the quarter finals Edwards beat Richard Bendrey,who plays for New Brighton Quarry Vikings, and then he just squeezed through in his semi final match against yet another Quarry Vikings player, Vic Williams. Meanwhile Hughes beat Cammell Laird's Peter Holian before getting the better of West Kirby Victoria's Colin Saville who was making one of his rare appearances on the green.

Edwards then had a fairly comfortable win in the final.

Quarter Finals: V. Williams 21, C. Mounsey 13; J. Edwards 21, R. Bendrey 12; N. Hughes 21, P. Holian 15; C. Saville 21, P. McGhee 17.

Semi Finals: Edwards 21, Williams 18; Hughes 21, Saville 17.

Final: Edwards 21, Hughes 12.

An exciting new bowls tournament is coming to the Wirral next month.

The MachFab Engineering 3 Player Team event will be taking place at the New Brighton Cricket and Bowling Club.

The event will consist of a unique format with the teams comprising of one pair and one single, with the singles match playing 31up.

This event has attracted some of the biggest names in crown green bowling to the area, including Gary Ellis (Manchester), John Bailey (Wales) and current Waterloo Champion Jon Palmer (Warick and Worcester).

The tournament will be played over two qualifying days (Saturday, April 13 – to Sunday, April 14) with the finals day on Saturday, April 20 (10.30am start).

There will be hot food and bar available throughout the three days.

This promises to be a fantastic event and it gives an opportunity to watch some of the game's best players compete for the £700 first prize.
