THE new year is to bring much sporting excitement at Wilmslow High School.

An appearance in the Cheshire Cup Final awaits the senior rugby team, 33 students will compete in the trampolining North of England Finals in Ireland while Izzy Sargent is playing in the girls' under 15s section of the British Junior Squash Open in Birmingham this week.

This follows a great ending to 2018 when Ellen Hardisty won a silver medal in the under 16s open relay at the British Rowing Indoor Championships, Harry Harding, Harry Oliver and Harris Fishwick achieved selection for Sale Sharks under 18s Academy rugby union team, while Josephine Fraser-Thomson and Grace Sutton celebrated selection by England Netball to register on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sporting Excellence.

In Birmingham, where the British Junior Squash Open starts today, Wednesday, and continues until Sunday, Izzy is among players from as far afield as Malaysia, Singapore and Egypt in what is the equivalent of Junior Wimbledon for squash.

In an event that is second only to the World Championships, Izzy, who reached the quarter finals of the British Junior Under 13s Nationals in Nottingham in October, was handed a tough opening draw against second seed Salma El Tayeb from Egypt.

The under 18s rugby team will face Wirral Grammar School in the Cheshire Cup Final at Chester Rugby Club on a date in January yet to be confirmed.

They booked their place with an outstanding team performance to defeat Lymm 31-7 in December.

Wilmslow turned round a convincing loss to Lymm earlier in the season and laid the foundations for this victory in a first half in which they took a 7-0 lead.

They proved to be too physical for their opponents and were 26-0 ahead with 10 minutes remaining before Lymm could manage a reply.

The trampolinists' trip to Ireland comes on the back of 15 of their students securing a top-three finish in individual events in Wigan last month at the north west round of the national competition.

Eight of the school's teams also qualified for the North of England Finals.

Wilmslow’s students will be seeking to win places in the National Trampolining Finals.
