MERE B’s hopes of playing in the Knutsford and District Amateur League’s top-flight next season received a boost after rivals for promotion suffered a defeat.

They ran out 5-2 victors away to improving Mobberley C and move seven points clear of Wilmslow RBL following their defeat at runaway leaders Wilmslow Cons by the same score.

Meanwhile the pacesetters’ lead at the turn of the year is worth a dozen points.

Brook Street B moved closer to those ahead of them when they brushed aside back-markers Mere C in their meeting.

The top two teams met in Division One’s match of the day and champions Mobberley A chalked up a 13th win of the campaign when they prevailed against Brook Street A.

Shaw Heath occupy third placed following a comfortable 6-1 win against Tatton, while Mobberley B climbed to fourth in the table following a 5-2 success at struggling Mere A – beaten in every league game to date.

That means Alderley Union, who did not have a game, fall below them.

The campaign is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, January 8.

However before that Mark Newall begins a bid to claim the Redwood Hire Champions Trophy for a third successive year.

The Mobberley A man has been paired with Rick Peers (Brook Street B) in a draw for the first round.

Mark Roylance, who took the title back in 2006, and Richard Bayley (Wilmslow Cons) have progressed already at the expense of Carl Wetton (Mobberley D) and Rob Clarke (Tatton) respectively.
