Alderley Edge 2nd 2-3 Knutsford
GRAEME Wolfenden’s last-gasp goal clinched victory for Knutsford last weekend after they had let slip a lead at Alderley Edge.
He unleashed a trademark reverse-stick shot the goalkeeper had no chance of stopping, and sent the Black Knights up to second in the standings.
They trail leaders Urmston only on goal-difference.
Any concern that they hadn’t made the most of early pressure was soothed after Joe Wright finished smartly from a shooting position inside the circle.
Wolfenden then doubled their tally when he converted from a short corner.
Alderley Edge capitalised when their guests relaxed and halved their arrears by the break.
They carried that momentum into the second-half, and goalkeeper Tom Wright was kept busy repelling a series of shots fired at him.
He made one outstanding stop when the ball appeared to have gone past him but could do nothing to prevent an equaliser after a rare mistake by Gary Brown gifted to the home team an opportunity that they took.
There was an ebb and flow to the game’s remainder, and both teams missed chances to take the lead, before Knutsford nicked a seventh win of the campaign with time running out.
Given space in the D, Wolfenden produced a moment of magic to settle the outcome.
A home date with Brooklands’ thirds follows at Westfield Drive on Saturday, push-back 2pm.
