STYAL’S junior golfers put in some great scores in the inaugural North West Junior Leagues Championship competition, however could not overcome a talented opposition, writes Nathan Okell.

In torrid weather conditions of strong winds and rain, the eventual winners were Southport and District Champions Royal Birkdale, with a combined score of 126.

Wirral League Champions Royal Liverpool came second with 122 points, and Styal, the Mid Cheshire League Champions, finished in third.

The five-a-side competition was decided by a scoring system of counting the best four scores from each team.

Styal’s Jack Muir finished with a joint highest score of any individual with 35, but despite this, they could not challenge two very good opposing sides for the title.

Ryan Owen also posted an impressive score of 31, with Sam Hall, Dan Beck and Ben Tomlinson each scoring 25, 24, and 21 respectively.

Mid Cheshire League organiser, Graham McCormack, said: “This competition idea was hatched earlier this year and following a meeting, all three leagues agreed to host the event annually.

“It was a great day, which next year will be held on one of the Southport and District League’s courses and in 2020 by the Mid Cheshire League.”
