Holmes Chapel 49-0 Whitchurch 2nd

HOLMES Chapel did what they had to, beating depleted opponents to record a fourth victory from five attempts during an encouraging start to the season.

It leaves them third in the North West Intermediate League’s Division Two South, three points adrift of 100 per-centers Helsby.

Whitchurch arrived at Station Road with 11 players, and borrowed two from their opponents.

That left the contest 14 versus 13 – an invite to play open, running rugby.

A scrappy opening was punctuated by a try for Jim Moss in the sixth minute, and he went on to complete a hat-trick before the end of the afternoon.

Captain Dom Moss had kept faith where he could with a side that had triumphed 21-10 at Didsbury Toc-H seconds the previous week, and was rewarded by his charges with an encouraging display.

Brad Thompson scored his first try in the club’s colours, while Tom Chambers, Rob Moore and Luke Cheetham added their names to a list of scorers too.

Joe Baskerville, standing in as kicker in the absence of Andy Davies, remained reliable throughout and converted all seven of his team’s tries.

Holmes Chapel’s seconds made it an afternoon to savour when they ran out emphatic victors, by 83-5, against their Village Spartans counterparts in a friendly.

The first-team travel to Winnington Park’s seconds, who recorded their first win of the season last weekend, when the campaign resumes on Saturday week, October 13.

Chapel’s seconds head to Bowdon’s fourths at the same time.
