WILMSLOW Wolves have the first win of their new season at a higher level in the bag.

Rick Jones' side came out on top 27-19 at Vale of Lune in the Northern Division's North Premier on Saturday, following an opening home loss to Kirkby Lonsdale a week earlier.

They established supremacy in the second half, though probably will not be best pleased about Vale finishing the game strongest.

A 10-7 interval lead was stretched out to 27-7 by the 66th minute.

Vale caught a lifeline with their second try of the game three minutes later and although they got over the white stripe again it was not until injury time.

In the end it was a win for discipline.

Wolves finished on the better side of the error count and their composure paid dividends against a side too eager to make up for a disastrous 92-12 opening day loss at Blaydon.

Evergreen Bob MacCallum was at the heart of things, the skipper bagging the try which put his side 20 points clear as well as enjoying 100 percent success rate with the boot for a personal haul of 17 points.

The morning's wet weather did not dampen Vale's spirits further though as they got themselves off to the kind of start a coach would demand after the previous week's catastrophe.

Full-back Jordan Dorrington sped over from halfway in the first minute, with Will Hunt converting.

The visitors were soon back on level terms though.

Flanker Adam Hewitt was first to react to the ball going loose close to the Vale line and he regathered the ball before forcing his way over for a try converted by MacCallum.

The only other score in the first half was a 34th-minute penalty strike from number 10 MacCullum though Wilmslow's defence had to stand up to a growing threat as the period wore on.

Wilmslow rebelled Vale's early advances in the second half, too, before a well executed forward drive forced an infringement from which another penalty stretched the lead to 13-7 after 52 minutes.

When centre Ethan Harding stormed through some weak defence four minutes later Wilmslow's advantage already looked to be a winning one.

Vale did try to find a way back into the game but they were undone in the 66th minute when MacCallum intercepted and raced 80 metres for a try that proved to put the visitors out of reach.

There was no collapse to come from Vale though, unlike seven days earlier.

Winger Olly Jacques found himself with room to outstrip the Wilmslow defenders and with Will Hunt adding the extras in the 69th minute Vale still fancied their chances of closing the 13-point gap.

And although they attempted to up the ante they were not able to apply sufficient pressure to break down Wilmslow due to a number of dropped passes.

Their efforts were rewarded in the third minute of injury time when Jacques raced clear for his second try but it was too little too late.

This Saturday Wilmslow host Alnwick, another opponent who are yet to taste victory this season.
